Resolutions
At the end of each year, as a world society, we tend to make resolutions for the coming year. We want to do something to improve our health, our circumstances, maybe just our list of accomplishments. Christians get two opportunities as they are able to use the season of Lent to either get back on track with their new year's resolutions, or to accomplish yet another task they have their minds set on.
Hogwash! You don't need a calender in order to resolve to change. How many people have you heard say they will start a diet or exercise program "tomorrow". Well, tomorrow never comes, and this is the moment of motivation, so grab a hold!
Only yesterday I watched postings lamenting the lack of motivation for yesterday's list of things to do today, as i tomorrow, which became an un-motivated today. Stop waiting for tomorrow; the time to start is now!
Your resolutions don't have to be world changing, or something that you even feel the need to share. Some folks say that in order to be successful with a change, you have to share it with others. Having an accountability partner is great, but not everything is meant to be shared. Your resolutions, rather they are to lose weight, or to behave with more kindness, are personal. Whatever you have chosen to change, is likely to require a plan as specific to you as your relationship with the Creator.
There are many resolutions each of us could make, and some of us will try to succeed at as many as we can think of. Some of us need to, while others just need to keep focused on one challenging change. If your goal is to stay sober this year, maybe losing weight as well is asking a bit much of yourself; then again, maybe the two will go hand-in-hand for you.
Resolutions are not to be used to impress others. Whatever their judgment of your lifestyle, it is yours to choose, and the consequences yours as well! We spend a great deal of time sharing resolutions, and maybe even supporting one another, but how much time do we actually spend deciding them? In general, we come up with something socially acceptable, or perhaps expected.
Right now, today, look at your life. Are you living it in a way that feels right for you? I'm not asking if you are happy all the time, or if you have everything you feel you should have. Usually we all have something about us that we want to do better. Now is the time to do that.
I have spent several weeks wondering what my new year's resolution should be and how to implement it for assured success. I realized that, while I am likely to fall in with the rest of society and publicly declare something I hope to do better over the next year than I did the last, I am also going to take it upon myself to remember the resolutions within my own heart. Success will not come from without, but from within, when I can begin my resolutions anew with each breath.
