Day of Self
Finding Balance is one of the most difficult prospects of human existence, and yet it is at our core. Whereas most of our energies should be put forth toward making this a better existence for all, and most selfish behavior is to be abhorred; still we must accept that we exist in a temporal plane. Therefore, we should add a tine for the physical, which is part of why our scales become so difficult.
I have referred to Anchor Days, which are personally established days wherein specific duties are designated to be accomplished. For my unique situation, this includes cleaning specific areas of my home. It must be understood that, on a daily basis there are other priorities which ground me to my values, but Anchor Days ground me on a more open frequency.
Mondays provide wonderful Anchor Days. In the current society, there is a regularity that goes beyond my personal influence. Another Anchor Day that I am discovering, seems to have a more individualized, though just as personal, direction. This is what I call the Day of Self.
My pattern, like many others, directs this day to Friday. For many, the end of the work week signifies a cause for celebration. For those who work at home, it is a cause for a shift of focus. For some individuals, the weekend is their busiest time. The family spends more time at home and creates more demands.
That is much the same at my home. During the week, I know I have a standard measure of hours each day in which to accomplish specific things. In my case, I must do my "work" before my husband comes home because he holds me to my limitations. I have a different set of duties once he comes home, and those extend into the weekend. Because I have specific needs, my alone time is precious to me, and unavailable for the weekends.
So I accommodate the pattern of my family by observing them, then inserting my overlaying harmonics to create just the right blend for the symphony which is my own family. This was initiated with Monday's Anchor Days, and continued with Friday's Day of Self.
On Friday, I make it a point to reset everything in order to better serve my family on the weekend. For some families that requires more energy to be able to play with the children, or filling the gas tank in order to accommodate the travels of older children. For me, it has to do with making my home and my person presentably comfortable for my partner.
This doesn't mean the same thing to him as it does to me. There was once a time in my life when the house had to be in perfect cleanliness, dinner ready to serve, and my person in superior vision in order to be prepared for the weekend. This is no longer the case, even though some of those qualifications were set in place by my own self.
But that is rather what the Day of Self is about: changing focus to the direction of the Self. For me, ever day is spent trying to improve my Self. I have specific issues with which I am processing, involving the balance between the individual and the Greater Whole. It is almost sinful for me to direct my gaze to specifically selfish thoughts, without the benefit of considering the Balance. But we live in a Temporal World, and part of the Balance is accepting that.
There is a difference for each of us based on our Individual Experience. What id required for my Day of Self is not the same as yours. For those who reside alone, the physical space in which you live may not be included in your needs for your Day of Self, whereas for those with specific forms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder may find themselves alphabetizing the pantry. Remember-each of us has specific needs.
I encourage each of you, however, to look at your Temporal World on your Day of Self. It is good for each of us to have a personal physical space, but it is also important for us to maintain that space. That space is not only what one might call our bedroom or office, but our bodies as well.
This is the day you do that extra bit of hygienic attention. From flossing your teeth for a change, to having your nails done or cleaning your room, you should establish a day to focus on the Self. This not only re-establishes your connection to the Temporal World, it allows a regularity of Survival basics that can prevent you from being one more drone so focused on survival that you disregard the world around you.
